Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce Recipe


For the Bread Pudding:

  • 6 cups stale bread cubes (French bread or any hearty bread)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants (optional)

For the Vanilla Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract


For the Bread Pudding:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the stale bread cubes and milk. Allow the bread to soak for about 10-15 minutes until it absorbs most of the liquid.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the soaked bread cubes and gently fold until the bread is evenly coated. Add raisins or currants if desired.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.

For the Vanilla Sauce:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Stir in the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and heavy cream. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

To Serve:

  1. Allow the bread pudding to cool for a few minutes before serving.
  2. Serve warm squares of bread pudding drizzled with the warm vanilla sauce.
  3. Optionally, you can garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
