For the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
For the Chocolate Filling:
- Melt the butter and chocolate together in a heatproof bowl. Stir in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and cinnamon until well combined.
Assembly:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
- Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Roll the dough tightly from the longer side, creating a log.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the log in half lengthwise, exposing the layers of chocolate.
- Twist the two halves together, creating a braided effect.
- Place the twisted dough into the prepared loaf pan.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the babka is golden brown.
Optional Sugar Syrup:
- While the babka is baking, combine water and sugar in a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then simmer until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.
- When the babka is done baking, brush the sugar syrup over the top while it’s still warm.
Allow the Chocolate Babka to cool before slicing and serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade treat!
